2017 has been a good year for Indian Esports with a flurry of activity and announcements and an injection of large sums of money into the scene. Earlier this year we saw Ronnie Screwvala’s UCypher and Nazara Games generate significant interest and buzz after announcing their plans for investment into the Indian Esports scene and according to latest reports we might just have a new player in the game.
Rajdip Gupta, the founder of a leading global messaging and voice API company, Route Mobile has just announced his entry into the esports space in India. According to this report by economic times, Rajdips’s current venture COBX will look to invest a sum of 10 million USD to help grow and promote esports in India. The current plans include an online domestic league, an international league and a team based out of India which is able to challenge at an international level.

Gupta, who recently sold 10% stake in Route Mobile for $23 million was quoted as saying that COBX wants to create awareness while providing an opportunity and a platform for Indian players.

This is the right time to invest in esports, and it could not have been better. There are other people trying different things in this space, but I want to create awareness and make esports a career option for serious players. - Rajdip Gupta

Online League
The online league for Indian teams will kick off in the second half of April, and will feature a prize pool of 10 lakh INR. For a pure online format, this is currently the highest ever prize pool in India.
International League

COBX has plans of hosting an international tournament in India as well, and with an expected prize pool of 300,000 USD teams from across the world are expected to join in on the action.

COBX is also looking to create a team based out of the country and provide them with the tools and resources necessary to be able to compete at an international level. Currently they are on the verge of announcing a Dota 2 squad details of which will be revealed soon.
Which of the 3 facets of COBX’s initial announcement do you think helps the scene grow the most? With so many big announcements and so much money involved it’s time for aspiring pro gamers to stop making excuses as to why Indian esports isn’t being able to rise to the occasion. We will be following the story as more details about the leagues and team are revealed so do stay tuned ….
