YouTuber Macro recently posted a video about the state of the Battle Royale genre and why it's so difficult to break into the scene.
Spellbreak, Hyper Scape, Rumbleverse and other promising titles died soon after release but is the genre dying?
Actually, no. PUBG, Warzone, Apex Legends and PUBG continue to dominate player counts on PC and console and no game has managed to challenge the top four.
The only battle royale that has managed to even come close to competing with them was Fall Guys.
The games that actually thrived managed to innovate in some way or another. Apex with its revive system and Evo Shields, Warzone with its Gulag, and more.
Macro feels that there is a lack of innovation in the genre and the hype around battle royales will die out over time. Extraction based shooters like Escape from Tarkov, Warzone DMZ and Dark and Darker might be the future.
